What is your passion?
To be lost in materiality
What is important for you?
To strive for connection to the real world
How do you Label yourself?
Because our work embraces different disciplines we gave ourselves the label ‘materializers’. Material is what connects all our work. Disciplines that we are practicing (interior, fashion, semi-finished products, furniture) are/were categorized in vertical columns, we see ‘materializers’ as a horizontal line crossing those columns.
Describe your work in one sentence without using the word ‘design’
We dive deep into a material and its process(es), stretch its physical borders, capture the essence of its qualities and find its key application.
How do you relate to the field of well-being?
Wellbeing is about feeling fine. We try to get to the essence of things and put more soul into everything we create in order to feel more connected.
What is well-being for you? How does it reflect in your work?
Cinema Tuschinski gives us, as long as film exists, a very pleasant sense of time. Junya Ishigami who suggests to live in between layers of nature and create a kind of hills by doing so. For us ‘time’ is a kind of key to wellbeing. We’re taking the past and the far future into account of everything we do.
Well-being is Human Centered. How to reach people and connect?
We strongly believe in clothing being a second skin, in the interior being a décor for human being. On a much bigger scale………….nature takes over. She knows how to take care of us.
What do you do for the world & what is your input?
Simplify the material world but at the same time getting more out of one material. A car-body does exist out of 36 layers and 17 materials. In the near future it can become one. Wood we know as hard and massive but it also has amazing qualities as being a textile.
How would your work influence the future?
We hope it does..! We would love to make people aware of all physical matter that goes through their hands and we would like them to make critical choices. But we want to give them a hand by developing attractive materials and giving every single material the right context.
How do you explain to your family what your doing?
We are down to earth magicians. (The things we create look unfamiliar and hard to define but are actually very simple; just exactly right).
To whom do you feel connected and target your work?
Of course all ethical thinkers but the hard challenge is to reach people that are unknown with that or even cross of it. Therefor we have to appeal, intrigue and invite them through our work.
How do others benefit most from what you do?
Hopefully they are feeling very fine within our materialized garments, interiors or bigger environments. We strongly believe that a souled environment make people feel respected and so contribute to a pleasant atmosphere in which we can live all together. Making the world bigger without touching its size.
What is your way of working regarding the research you do & the strategy you have to reach your audience?
We have a very open (for divergent thinking) but focused (on what’s realistic) mind. Our way of doing research is a come and go of those two.
To achieve our vision we need to communicate the steps that we skip. Finding them and placing them in the right order is sometimes hard but needed to make it your audience able to climb that stairs…
How do you structure your life?
We’re working on that…..
When talking about design what do you want to be associated with.
The women that are crossing the border of design. Or the office that collaborates with nature.
What kind of media are you working with? (skills & programs you use)
Websites, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter for online acquisition. We are using video more and more because this explains material characters the best online.
Scype/Facetime for meetings, if an offline catch-up isn’t possible.
Photoshop, InDesign, Final Cut, Illustrator for visual impressions, presentations, books, videos, technical drawings.
And last but not least unfortunately lots of xls and word documents for contracts, calendars, budgets and financial overviews.
What type of assignment do you feel comfortable with?
Any… as long as there is physical matter involved. As a designer you have a lot of power. Better use it good.
